Welcome to our Web site! The Davidson’s Fort Project began in March of 2006 as a result of the partnership between Mark Hall and Gary Jones. The two share the common interest of historical sites and artifacts. Mark Hall has prior non-profit experience and he previously partnered with others to form the non-profit organization, Grants Museum in Old Fort to house Native American artifacts. The museum operated for a period of fifteen years prior to closing. During this period, Hall gathered additional knowledge of the history of the town of Old Fort. He became particularly interested in the Revolutionary War period.
Gary Jones worked with Hall on other projects and during their association he too became interested in the same historical era. The two partnered to research the possibility of constructing a replica of Davidson’s Fort in what is now the town of Old Fort, North Carolina. Once the decision was made to begin the project, the two contracted to purchase eighteen acres of land inside the Old Fort city limits. The property is visible from Interstate 40 and accessed from U.S. Highway 70 West onto Lackeytown Road. Hall and Jones met with the Old Fort Town Aldermen and Mayor Garland Norton requesting their cooperation and support of the project. After multiple meetings, the town voted to support the project. Upon arriving at the site, visitors will enter the welcome center/museum area and then proceed into the fort via a self-guided tour. The fort itself will interpret living conditions and daily life during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The site will include a replica Cherokee village where other reenactments and interpretations will be performed. Other uses throughout the year include programs for school groups. A potential future use will be inclusion in a proposed national trail, Rutherford Trace. Senator Joe Sam Queen is working towards achieving this designation. Rutherford Trace travels throughout western North Carolina including this fort his men originally built in 1776. Now that a non-profit status is achieved, the fundraising process will begin. The construction will begin slowly as funds are received. A projected completion date is March 2010.
